Question / Issue
Pointing vs. Transferring Your Domain Name

Answer / Solution

We host (server where site files are stored) your new site. We start hosting your new site as soon as your proof site is created. However, your domain name (site address on the internet) is different. You can choose to either point or transfer your domain name. There is no extra fee to point or transfer your primary domain.

Pointing

If you choose to Point your domain the management of your domain stays with your current Registrar. We just direct your domain name to access your new site on our servers. For this, we need your Registrar username and password so that we can make the necessary setting changes. After we point your domain, it can take up to 24 hours for your site to update across the Internet and for your new site to be accessible to everyone.

If you do not want to provide us with your Registrar username and password, you or your IT can make the necessary setting changes yourself:

  1. Insurance Website Builder DNS Settings
  2. How do I point my domain to my new website using GoDaddy?
  3. How do I point my domain to my new website using Network Solutions?

Reasons to Point Your Domain:

  1. You've purchased a long term plan with your current Registrar so the domain is paid for for the next several years. In this case, you can leave it at your current Registrar to get the most of your investment with them.
  2. You have several domain names with your current Registrar.  It'll be easier to keep all your domain names in one place so that you can keep track of them all instead of moving them into separate places.
  3. You want to keep your domain in the same place to avoid transferring it too much. If you feel that you may move your website in the future keeping your current registrar will save you the hassle of transferring your domain multiple times.

Transferring

Transferring your domain means that you are moving the management of your domain from your current Registrar to us. You will continue to be the owner of your domain if you transfer your domain to us and are free to move it elsewhere later on. You just need to stay current on your billing. Transferring is a longer process and can take seven days to complete. However, this can vary depending on the Registrar. To transfer your domain, you will need to unlock your domain and obtain your domain's EPP code. This is an Authorization Code that allows us to transfer your domain from your current Registrar to us. You can contact your current Registrar for assistance on unlocking your domain and obtaining the EPP code.

A few things to keep in mind about transferring your domain:

  1. We can't transfer your domain if your domain is less than 60 days old (has it been 60 days since you purchased the domain?)
  2. We can't transfer your domain if your domain is about to expire in less than 60 days (will you need to renew your domain in less than 60 days?)
  3. When you transfer your domain, some Registrars do not allow you to keep them as your email host and will require you to transfer your emails as well. You will need to check with your Registrar to see if that is the case with them.

Reasons To Transfer Your Domain:

  1. You will only need to deal with billing from one company. If you transfer your domain over to us, you won't need to keep paying your old Registrar for maintaining your domain. However, do not cancel the services of your old Registrar until your domain has successfully transferred since it can cause an interruption of your services.
  2. You will only need to contact one company. If you have questions about your domain or site, you only need to contact ITC instead of needing to contact your Registrar.
